Tick, Cross or Strikethrough - What kind of To Day list person are you?

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

When I ask customers this questions I observed something very interesting. It is like asking someone 'which way do you have the toilet roll - over or under?'

The looks on people's face tells me one very clear message, that To Day List Tribies believe there is only one way to track progress and of course their way is the best way.

As a valued To Day List Tribe member I am keen to know which way do you To Day List? Tick, Cross or Strikethrough all have their pros and cons, but it is clearly a very personal preference. We interviewed our very own founder Natalie Jane to find out how she 'To Day Lists'. During the interview Natalie confirmed that she uses a combination of the Tick and strikethrough method, with the very occasional cross. Her nuances come depending on the size of the task as well as the overall sense of achievement.

Natalie provided us with examples to demonstrate this in action.

"In the work context - I have on my To Day List to finalise a presentation pack and send it out to meeting attendees as pre reading materials for a workshop coming up. When I complete the pack and send it out I will create a little box and tick it off the list. Should I then receive feedback that it was a great pack, I will then strike it through to give myself an increased sense of satisfaction. It makes the task feel more final and heighten my sense of accomplishment".

Natalie then continued to explain her style in a home context.

"If I am at home I will likely have domestic chores on the To Day List, like washing, prep dinner, make school snacks etc. Putting on the washing gets me a tick, however drying it, folding it and putting it away gets me a strikethrough.

"I may also use a strikethrough for an item that I had on the list but then chose not to do it due to a change in my days priorities or better yet hubby did it for me".

"I have also been known from time to time to add an additional item or two to my To Day List just so I can tick if off. At the end of the day when I reflect on how I feel and how successful I was at staying focused I find adding that little extra task and then ticking if off gives me that extra buzz to finish off the day. Then I hit delete and am ready for a fresh start the next day."

There is no right or wrong way to 'To Day List', there is simply a greater level of focus, simplified days and increased in productivity. Sounds Like a win, win, win to me!

Key point to note - Never let a non Tribe To Day List member question your style or approach. They are just not in the know. Your progress, attention and output will speak for itself. Over time they too will want to come and join the cool kids!
